I briefly practiced in India and Jamaica, W.I., before completing my pediatric residency in Galveston, Texas. In 1995, I established Jefferson Pediatrics with the belief that all children should have access to comprehensive preventative medicine. Throughout the years, my staff and I have worked to create a patient-friendly environment where parents feel heard and children receive exceptional healthcare. Our practice specializes in a holistic approach that emphasizes the importance of a healthy lifestyle and focuses on individualized care. In 2014, I became certified in holistic integrated medicine to better provide a more personalized approach. I specialize in integrative medicine and holistic pediatrics, with a special focus on autism, lactation consultation, and wellness changes. In 2024, we are proud to announce the expansion of our practice to include adults. Fortunately, measles is a vaccine- preventable illness. 🦠 Measles: What Parents Need to Know Symptoms, Prevention & How to Protect Your Family At Jefferson Pediatrics and Family Medicine, your child’s health is our priority. Measles is a highly contagious virus that can cause serious complications—but the MMR vaccine makes it preventable. 🤒 What Is Measles? Measles spreads through coughs, sneezes, and airborne droplets that linger up to 2 hours. It's extremely contagious: 9 out of 10 unvaccinated people exposed will become ill. Contagious window: 4 days before and after the rash appears. 🔍 Symptoms (8–12 days after exposure) High fever -Cough, runny nose, red/watery eyes -Koplik spots (tiny white spots in the mouth) -Rash starting on the face and spreading -Possible diarrhea or ear infections -Serious risks: Pneumonia, brain swelling (encephalitis), hearing loss, or even death. 💡 Home Care There's no cure, but you can help your child recover: 🛌 Rest & fluids ❄️ Fever relief (acetaminophen/ibuprofen, as directed) 🏠 Stay home for at least 4 days after the rash begins 🌍 Planning to Travel? It’s most common in children who haven’t been vaccinated with the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine. Symptoms to Watch For: Swelling in the cheeks or jaw Fever Headache Muscle aches Fatigue Loss of appetite Pain while chewing or swallowing If your child is showing these symptoms, it’s best to call our office before coming in—mumps is contagious and we want to help protect other patients. 💡 Caring for Your Child at Home There is no specific treatment for mumps, but you can help your child feel better with the following supportive care: 🛌 Rest Encourage plenty of rest so your child’s body can focus on fighting the virus. 💧 Fluids Make sure they drink water, broth, and other clear liquids to stay hydrated—especially if they have a fever. 🧊 Cold Compress Apply a cold or warm compress to the swollen glands to help reduce pain and inflammation. 🍦 Soft Foods Offer soft, bland foods like applesauce, yogurt, mashed potatoes, or smoothies to make eating more comfortable. 💊 Pain Relief Over-the-counter medications like acetaminophen or ibuprofen (as recommended by your pediatrician) can help manage fever and discomfort. 👨⚕️ When to Call Us Contact Jefferson Pediatrics and Family Medicine if: Your child has a high fever (over 102°F) They have trouble eating or drinking Symptoms worsen or last more than 7–10 days You suspect complications like testicular swelling, abdominal pain, or severe headache 🛡️ Prevention is Key The best way to protect your child from mumps is the MMR vaccine.
