🦠 Mumps: What Parents Need to Know
What Is Mumps?
Mumps is a contagious viral infection that primarily affects the salivary glands, causing them to swell and become painful. It’s most common in children who haven’t been vaccinated with the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine.
Symptoms to Watch For:
Swelling in the cheeks or jaw
Fever
Headache
Muscle aches
Fatigue
Loss of appetite
Pain while chewing or swallowing
If your child is showing these symptoms, it’s best to call our office before coming in—mumps is contagious and we want to help protect other patients.
💡 Caring for Your Child at Home
There is no specific treatment for mumps, but you can help your child feel better with the following supportive care:
🛌 Rest
Encourage plenty of rest so your child’s body can focus on fighting the virus.
💧 Fluids
Make sure they drink water, broth, and other clear liquids to stay hydrated—especially if they have a fever.
🧊 Cold Compress
Apply a cold or warm compress to the swollen glands to help reduce pain and inflammation.
🍦 Soft Foods
Offer soft, bland foods like applesauce, yogurt, mashed potatoes, or smoothies to make eating more comfortable.
💊 Pain Relief
Over-the-counter medications like acetaminophen or ibuprofen (as recommended by your pediatrician) can help manage fever and discomfort.
